HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH THE STARS

stars

Gazing upon distance bodies like the stars is a hypnotic thing. We used to stand out in darkness and scan the sky through the use of a telescope. Experts have now come up with photographs of the stars.

What you will need in taking photographs of the stars.

Before the start of the real task, you need to do the following:

Scouting and planning; The 3 scouting and planning criteria need to be followed for capturing nice images of the stars.

A dark night; Checking the moon’s phase should be done first. Photography of the stars is best during the new moon.

A dark location; This can work well by the use of the blue marble light pollution map-which was last edited on 2014.Areas which are black on the map are good on shooting the stars while white areas should be avoided since they are light polluted. For light pollution minimization, you need to find a place in a timely manner possible. You can fire off successive shot around the horizon by the use of high ISO for time limitation that it would take for each shot exposure. As exposure time goes, keep it as short as possible to avoid movements of the stars.

Clear skies; for best results of the star photography, nights with 0-50% clouds is the best.

The equpments required include:

photographAn advanced camera.

The control aperture of the camera should allow full manual exposure. The camera needs to focus manually. An advanced DSCR/ mirror less camera are also required to handle the noise. Cameras which have full frame offers quality which is the best. You can use a censor camera crop. Cameras like Nikon full frame, Nikon compatible lenses and Canon crop sensor cameras are the best in star’s photography.

A sturdy tripod.

The tripod needs to be taller and sturdy to enable you shoot exposures which are long.An L-Bracket can be recommended.

A fast-lens

When using an interchangeable lens of the camera, use a fast aperture lens with wide angles.

Sky map app.

Flashlight-For light painting.

A timer

To help in taking exposures which are longer than 30 seconds. You also need to set your camera on BULB mode and holding it down to its shutter button in a manually way.

The basic set-up.

When photographing the stars, you need much light to hit the sensor. A combination of ISO which is high aperture that is wide and also shutters speeds which are strong.

How to focus.

Autofocus systems need amount of contrast for proper focus. When taking a picture of the stars, rack your focus as far as it can go and then come slightly a bit; hence helping focusing your lens on infinity which is a focus which is proper to shoot the stars.

Processing the stars’ photos.

This is an intimidating process that requires RAW format shooting. Break up your photograph into 2 zones for processing of the sky and the foreground. Use LR4’s adjustment tool for tweak selection of each region until you are satisfied with the results.

Post processing of the photographs of the stars.

Edit the RAW files using light room 4 and CS6 photoshop.4 and 5 light room works great in RAW file conversion.Luminousty masks are used in Photoshop CS6 for ultimate control achievements.

Photography of the stars does not happen like an accident but it needs more practice.
